challah bread

First heard about it from my aunt in Chicago who has been baking it for years. It's a family favorite now, thanks to her. On one of my many visits to their lovely place, she did a demo and gave me the recipe...it has been a staple since then. I would also make variations of it adding chopped walnuts & cranberries or other dried mixed fruits. The result is always good...this bread is best for french toast. Posted by Hello

    1. Thanks for your inquiry. This is the recipe that my aunt shared with me:

      CHALLAH BREAD
      3/4 cup lukewarm water
2 large eggs (at room temperature)
      1/4 cup margarine (softened)
3 cups all purpose flour (may be combined with bread flour)
      1/4 cup sugar
      1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons instant yeast (I use SAF brand)

Put the water, margarine & eggs first in the bread machine pan. Add the flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Press DOUGH setting in the bread machine. After the cycle is done, remove the risen dough from the bread machine and transfer to a floured board or surface. Flatten & divide into 3 parts & braid. Transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Cover with cloth and let rise for about 20 minutes. Brush with eggwash and sprinkle with sesame seeds before baking. Bake at 350F for about 20-25 minutes or until top is light brown. Allow to cool before slicing.

      Happy baking!
