pepper steak

Chinese pepper steak is only one of the best loved dishes in Chinese cuisine and in many Chinese restaurants. This popular dish, which may be one of the most popular items in Chinese take out menus, has very few ingredients so it can easily be cooked at home. Lean sirloin beef (I used mock tender roast cut) were thinly sliced and marinated in salt, pepper and lime or lemon juice. It may be refrigerated for a few hours or overnight. For the sauce, combine and mix 2-3 teaspoons of cornstarch, 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce, 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce or soy sauce and 1 cup water in a small cup or bowl. Set aside. Slice one green bell pepper and half an onion. Mince one clove of garlic. In a skillet, pan fry the marinated beef in small batches until fully cooked and browned. Transfer to a bowl. Add more oil to the pan if needed then sautee the garlic, onions and bell pepper slices. Add the cooked beef and stir fry for a few minutes. Transfer to a serving dish or bowl. Slowly pour the cornstarch mixture into the skillet and simmer until thickened, adjusting the consistency if needed. Spoon the sauce on the beef. I served this with steamed brown rice.
